Guidelines for Thermography in Architecture and Civil Engineering publication

The aim of this book is to bring the existing experience with the use of passive thermography in construction closer to the reader in a condensed form and thus to show the possibilities of technology – but also its realistic limits. What are the prerequisites for obtaining meaningful measurement results from thermographic examinations? This guide provides a condensed form of the authors’ many years of experience on how thermal defects and structural damage such as thermal bridges, air leaks or moisture penetration can be localized using the non-destructive and quick-to-use measurement and examination method.

In addition to an introduction to the basic physical principles, the book offers an up-to-date overview of the technology, structure, standards and selection criteria of common thermographic systems. Using numerous and succinctly selected practical examples, it shows the diverse possibilities and areas of application of infrared thermography as well as the limits of its application.

Finally available as an English edition reference work on thermography in the building industry Bundling theory, standards and technology as well as concise applications. Suitable as a textbook and reference work for both beginners and experienced users.

Table of contents…

Thermography is based on the fact that a body emits its own characteristic radiation. This phenomenon is caused by the internal – mechanical movement of the molecules that is present in every body. The intensity of the movement of the molecules depends on the temperature of the body in question. Since the movement of charges and movement of molecules are equivalent, the body emits energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation. This form of radiation moves at the speed of light and obeys the laws of optics. Electromagnetic radiation can be deflected, bundled by lens systems or reflected from surfaces. The thermal radiation is in the infrared wavelength range and is not visible to the human eye.
