The Swedish author and illustrator Eva Lindström received the world’s largest literature award, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, at a ceremony in the Stockholm Concert Hall on Monday evening. The award was presented by H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria.
− It’s important for everyone to be able to access worlds we might never encounter any other way, to be exposed to ideas that make life seem bigger, ideas that stimulate our imaginations, said Eva Lindström during the award ceremony.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Since the creation of the award, the ALMA jury has selected 22 laureates from around the world, including authors, illustrators, and reading promotion organisations. The 2022 laureate is the Swedish picture book artist Eva Lindström. She writes stories that shift between the everyday and the existential, combining shrewd humour with absurd mystery
Apart from the prize sum, 5 million SEK, Eva Lindström received a diploma, presented by H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. The diploma is created by Emma AdBåge och Henning Trollbäck.
In her congratulatory speech, Swedish Minister for Culture, Jeanette Gustafsdotter said: Eva Lindström vid prisutdelningen
− I know that Eva Lindström is beloved by her readers – in my family, by both children and grown-ups – and that she is a great source of inspiration for other creators of picture books. It is my hope that now, even more readers will be able to experience her amazing work.
The ceremony was hosted by the actor and television presenter Philomène Grandin and Sirqus Alfon gave a music/circus crossover performance.
